Egypt Celebrates International Volunteer Day via New Initiative

The Egyptian Voluntary Work Charter for Sustainable Development was launched in Cairo on Wednesday in line with the states’ activities to celebrate International Volunteer Day.

Misr El Kheir Foundation organized a roundtable entitled; "The Egyptian Volunteering Movement: Reality and Opportunities for Growth." It shed light on the current situation in backing initiatives in Egypt, besides underlining the contributions of volunteering and youth initiatives in achieving sustainable development.

With the presence of representatives from the Ministry of Social Solidarity (MoSS) as well as the National Alliance for Civil Development, the roundtable touched upon the future of the partnership between the civil sector and both the government and private sectors.

On his part, Mohamed Al-Refai, CEO of Misr El-Kheir Foundation, stressed the importance of volunteering for community development, affirming that this process is based on participation, respect for the volunteers' opinions, and belief in their abilities.

Al-Refai underscored the state's interest in the voluntary work process with the development of work mechanisms in this field, stressing that the voluntary work charter is about to be issued by the MoSS.

On his part, Mohamed Mamdouh, Head of the non-governmental organization (NGO) Development Sector at Misr El Kheir Foundation, said volunteer work is a tool for flourishment in all societies, adding that it become an integral part of the culture of developed societies.

Mamdouh added that the Egyptian Voluntary Work Charter regulates the relationship between volunteers and voluntary organizations, in addition to defining ethical principles and human values, given that the human element is the richest resource to advance the development process.

The International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development was adopted by the United Nations (UN) on 17 December 1985. Celebrating the day worldwide aims to thank volunteers for their efforts while raising public awareness about their contribution to society.

This event is organized by NGO and is supported by UN volunteers, a global program for peace and development sponsored by the international organization.
