The American Third Avenue Bridge was closed due to the extreme heat, causing a huge traffic jam.
A video clip from the scene showed New York Defense Forces boats spraying water along and below the open bridge in an attempt to cool it after it was exposed to extreme heat due to climate change.
The Third Avenue Bridge in the United States, which connects the Bronx to Manhattan across the Harlem River, has reopened to traffic after it was stuck in the open position earlier this week, due to the intense heat that expands the metal, according to American media.
CBS New York's Dan Rice reported that when workers tried to move the bridge, it failed to align with the locking mechanism on the Manhattan side of the span. This problem has since been remedied.
The fault caused major traffic delays in the South Bronx along the Major Deegan Expressway and East 138th Street.
Opened in August 1898, the Third Avenue Bridge is a single-lane structure, meaning that vehicular traffic flows only from the Bronx to Manhattan. It also does not have toll fees, as many vehicles use it daily.
