Though the 93rd Annual Academy Awards may have been pared back and partly hosted in a train station (albeit one that has been dubbed the ‘Sistine Chapel’ of railway stations) due to social distancing requirements, nothing could prevent Hollywood’s great and good from bringing a dash old-school glamour back to the real-life red carpet with some jaw-dropping jewellery.
From Zendaya and Reese Witherspoon in Bulgari to Andra Day in Tiffany & Co. and Carey Mulligan in Cartier, the A-list sparkled in diamonds. Even if the Oscar is the must-have bauble for the night.
There were diamond necklaces aplenty, with Zendaya pairing her sunny Valentino gown with a spectacular necklace featuring a six carat fancy yellow diamond from Bulgari’s upcoming high jewellery collection, Magnifica, which debuts later this summer. Meanwhile, best actress nominee Vanessa Kirby wearing a Cartier necklace back-to-front, allowing its platinum pendant to fall between her shoulder blades, and best supporting actress nominee Maria Bakalova accessorised her low-cut Louis Vuitton confection with a collarbone-grazing rivière necklace with over 75 carats of flawless brilliants by Moussaieff.
Other prize-worthy pieces included a dazzling array of chandelier earrings. Emerald Fennell, who scooped the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Promising Young Woman, kept things in the family by donning a pair of morganite drop earrings by her father, the British jeweller Theo Fennell. Angela Bassett and Olivia Colman, both ladies in red, wore glamorous shoulder-dusters by Chopard, whilst best actress nominee Viola Davis opted for sparklers by Forevermark.
