Egyptian tennis player Mayar Sherif has advanced to the second round of Roland Garros, becoming the first Egyptian woman to win a main draw match at the competition.

Just over a week ago, Sherif managed to win the Liqui Moly Open for a second consecutive year, moving her to the 49th place in the WTA rankings.

Wasting no time, Sherif entered the first round of section 2 of the 2022 French Open’s Women’s singles, where she was drawn against Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk.

The 19-year-old is nine places behind Sherif at 58 but proved herself as a tough opponent, with the two sets finishing 6-3, 7-6 to the Egyptian.

This becomes the first time Sherif has won a main draw Roland-Garros match and only the second Egyptian to do so after Ismail El Shafei.
