Tatjana Haenni, former Swiss international and a highly respected football administrator, has become the first woman to serve as CEO of a Bundesliga club after being appointed on Wednesday as the new chief executive of RB Leipzig.

Haenni brings decades of experience in sports management following her retirement as a professional player.

She previously held several major positions in women’s football, including over ten years working within FIFA, managing women’s football operations for the Swiss Football Association, and serving as a sporting director in the U.S. National Women’s Soccer League, among other leadership roles before stepping down earlier this year.

Oliver Mintzlaff, chairman of Leipzig’s supervisory board, praised her appointment, saying: “During our discussions, we were impressed by her extensive experience, which combines deep knowledge, strong leadership, and strategic vision,” according to a statement reported by Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper.

Haenni will officially assume her duties on January 1, 2026, as Leipzig currently sits second in the Bundesliga table, eight points behind leaders Bayern Munich ahead of the winter break scheduled from December 21 to January 9.
