Amr Talaat, Minister of Communications and Information Technology stressed during his speech before the parliament on Sunday, the ministry's success in maintaining its position as the largest growth sector in Egypt by achieving a growth rate of 16% during the current fiscal year.
Talaat pointed to the development of the sector's performance by reviewing the size of the sector's GDP, which rose from EGP 80.1 billion in 2017/18 to EGP 93.5 billion in 2018/19, and EGP 107.7 billion in the previous fiscal year.
He added that the sector’s contribution to the state’s GDP rose from 3.2% to 4% to reach 4.4% in the current fiscal year, and digital exports grew from $3.2 billion to $4.1 billion.
His speech also dealt with the most prominent achievements of the sector, in addition to the ministry's action plan in light of its strategy to build a digital Egypt, which is implemented according to three axes: digital transformation, capacity building, and innovation promotion, and is based on three principles: effective infrastructure, international and legislative leadership and governance.
The minister continued, “The number of workers in the sector witnessed an increasing growth from 233,000 workers to 281,000," adding that the Egyptian Global Center also advanced in the network readiness index within a year from 92 to 84.
Talaat explained that 50 databases were added to the information infrastructure in partnership with the Administrative Control Authority, bringing the number of databases to 75, referring to the cooperation of the Ministry with all sectors of the state to achieve digital transformation.
"A EGP 3 billion project is being implemented to digitize government services, including the Egypt digital platform, which has more than a million registered members, post offices and government service centers," Talaat emphasized.
He noted that the services of the first phase of the Egypt digital platform providers 45 digital government services within the packages of traffic, catering, documentation and real estate services, in addition to court services, commercial registry and the real estate tax services.
He added that the second phase will include the launch of 21 other services for courts, social housing and civil status, in addition to a number of catering and documentation services, licenses and vehicles, explaining that different methods are available of the payment of services' fees electronically, including e-payment outlets, mobile wallets, and credit cards.
Meanwhile, a cooperation protocol was signed between the Ministries of Communications and Parliamentary Affairs to promote the use of the latest technological means to achieve institutional development and digital transformation, in the presence of Minister of Parliament Affairs Alaa El Din Fouad.
