The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) announced on Wednesday the successful rescue of all crew members aboard the cargo vessel FENER after the ship began listing dangerously and risked sinking outside the canal’s main shipping lane.

The incident occurred in the western anchorage area north of Port Said, approximately five nautical miles from the northern entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, according to an official statement.

The SCA said it received a distress call from the vessel’s captain at 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, prompting the immediate deployment of two tugboats and three marine launches to evacuate the crew and secure the vessel.

All 12 crew members were safely rescued. One seafarer sustained a shoulder dislocation and received medical treatment at a Suez Canal Authority hospital before being transferred to a hotel at his request. The remaining crew members were reported to be in good health.

SCA Chairman Osama Rabie praised the swift coordination among the authority’s departments, noting that marine traffic units mobilized rescue vessels without delay, while emergency services dispatched fully equipped ambulances to the scene.

Security and public relations teams also worked closely with relevant agencies to ensure the provision of necessary logistical support throughout the operation.

Rabie added that the SCA’s crisis management committee continues to monitor the situation around the clock, with heightened readiness to address any further developments involving the vessel.

The authority reaffirmed its commitment to expanding maritime and logistical services to meet customer needs under both routine and emergency conditions. These services include marine ambulance operations and crew replacement services, designed to enhance safety and operational resilience along the canal.

In its statement, the SCA emphasized the Suez Canal’s readiness to handle emergencies professionally, drawing on an integrated system that combines navigational expertise, specialized marine rescue units, maritime security, and marine pollution response capabilities.

The FENER, which is 122 meters long with a cargo capacity of 4,000 tons, underscores the importance of rapid intervention to safeguard seafarers and ensure the uninterrupted flow of global trade through one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors.

No disruption to canal traffic was reported as a result of the incident.
