The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) affirmed its commitment to implementing international agreements that guarantee freedom of maritime navigation for ships transiting the canal, whether commercial or military, without discrimination of the ship's nationality, in line with the provisions of the Constantinople Convention, which constitutes a basic guarantee to preserve the canal's position as the most important sea lane in the world.
This came in response to questions circulated on some social media platforms about the Suez Canal Authority allowing warships of different nationalities to pass through the waterway.
The Suez Canal Authority clarifies that the passage of warships through the Suez Canal is subject to special procedures.
It is worth noting that the Constantinople Convention, which was signed in 1888, has since drawn the basic features of the nature of international dealings with the Suez Canal, as it preserved the right of all countries to benefit from this global facility, which the agreement expressed in its first article by stating that "the Suez Maritime Canal shall always be free and open, whether in time of war or in time of peace, to every commercial or military vessel without discrimination of nationality.
