Sudanese Minister of Irrigation Yasser Abbas said that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) negotiations between the delegations of Sudan, Egypt and Ethiopia had achieved "significant progress" in the technical aspects, pointing out to differences on the legal aspects.

Abbas added, in a press conference, that the aim of these negotiations is to reach a fair and satisfied agreement, Sky News reported.

Abbas noted: “Sudan recognizes the right of countries in development in accordance with the rules of international law for water projects, the most important of which is the fair and reasonable use without harming others. “

Last week, Sudanese Foreign Minister Asma Abdullah said that If Ethiopia faces a strong position from Sudan and Egypt, that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) should not be filled before reaching an agreement, it will think twice.

Abdullah explained that the GERD negotiations completed more than 90 percent of its files, and these negotiations should be resumed.

Last month, Egypt expressed its readiness to engage in the negotiating process to complete the remaining side of the agreement of filling and operating GERD and participate in the next meeting, according to the Egyptian foreign ministry.

Egypt also stressed that this meeting should be serious and constructive-to reach a fair, balanced and comprehensive agreement that preserves Egypt’s water interests and takes into account the interests of Ethiopia and Sudan.
