The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Saturday that the President of the Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, officially informed the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) of Sudan's decision to freeze its membership in the organization.

The Sudanese Foreign Ministry issued a statement stating that al-Burhan sent a letter to the President of Djibouti, who currently holds the IGAD presidency, Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, in which he conveyed Sudan's decision to freeze its membership in the organization.

The statement explained that this decision came as a result of IGAD's disregard for Sudan's official communication regarding its disengagement and freezing of dealings with IGAD on any matters related to the current situation in Sudan.

Furthermore, the statement pointed out, "Nevertheless, a clause about Sudan was included in the closing statement of the 42nd extraordinary summit of heads of state and government, which was held on Thursday, January 18, in the Ugandan capital, Kampala. Sudan boycotted the summit, and its closing statement contained expressions that violated Sudan's sovereignty."

The statement emphasized that the Sudanese government is not bound by nor concerned with everything IGAD issues regarding Sudan's affairs.

Last week, the Sovereign Council stated that the Sudanese government sees no need to hold a summit to discuss Sudan's situation before implementing the outcomes of the previous summit, considering the events in Sudan as an internal matter.

In a statement issued on Thursday, IGAD leaders at the end of the summit called on the warring parties in Sudan to hold direct talks within two weeks.

They also expressed concern about the ongoing conflict and the deteriorating security and humanitarian conditions resulting from the war in the country.
