Sudan Describes Ethiopian Statement as Regrettable and Irresponsible

On Thursday, the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed regret over the untrue and baseless accusations made by the governor of the Ethiopian Amhara region that Sudan had provided training to groups opposing the Ethiopian government at the Sudanese territories adjacent to the region, and sent them to fight in the Tegray Region.

In a press statement, the Ministry said that Ethiopia seeks to evade its internal crises in order to achieve internal political interests, denouncing such regrettable and irresponsible statement as it does not serve the issues of good neighborliness, security, and stability of the area

Sudan, Egypt, and Ethiopia have been in talks for years over the technical and legal issues related to the filling and operation of the GERD.

Ethiopia, which started building the GERD in 2011, expects to produce more than 6,000 megawatts of electricity from the dam project, while Egypt and Sudan, downstream Nile Basin countries that rely on the river for its freshwater, are concerned that the dam might affect their share of the water resources.
