Sudan has asked the UN Security Council to consider the possibility of imposing international sanctions on Ethiopia over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam issue, according to what Sudanese Foreign Minister Maryam al-Sadiq al-Mahdi said in an interview with Al-Hadath channel.

In a letter to the Security Council, Sudan urged to discuss the social, economic and political effects of Ethiopia’s move of the second filling of the Renaissance Dam on the two downstream countries, and called on the United Nations to intervene and prevent Addis Ababa from the filling process during the coming weeks.

This is the latest attempt by Egypt and Sudan to mobilize international support for their position in the dispute. Last week, the Arab League called on the Security Council to hold an urgent session to discuss the issue of the Renaissance Dam, following the emergency meeting held by the League Council in Doha. Egypt had urged the council earlier this month to intervene to prevent Ethiopia from proceeding with the second filling of the dam.
