A strong earthquake measuring 6.5 magnitude struck southern and central Mexico on Friday, triggering seismic alarms and briefly interrupting the first press conference of the year held by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

According to Mexico’s National Seismological Service, the earthquake’s epicenter was located near the town of San Marcos in the southern state of Guerrero, close to the Pacific resort city of Acapulco. The tremor was widely felt across Guerrero and as far away as Mexico City, prompting residents and tourists to evacuate buildings and move into the streets as a precaution.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the quake occurred at a depth of approximately 35 kilometers (21.7 miles), about 4 kilometers northwest of Rancho Viejo, a mountainous area roughly 90 kilometers northeast of Acapulco.

Local civil defense authorities in Guerrero confirmed scattered landslides in and around Acapulco and along several highways in the region. Emergency teams were dispatched to assess infrastructure and road conditions, though no major disruptions were immediately reported.

President Sheinbaum resumed her press conference shortly after the seismic activity subsided, stating that she had spoken directly with Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado, who confirmed that no serious damage or casualties had been reported so far.

Mexico is located along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, making earthquakes a frequent occurrence. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and urged the public to remain alert to possible aftershocks.
