The World Bank (WB) Index and Standard & Poor's Global Market Information on Container Ports Performance show that the Middle East (ME) and East Asian ports have been the best in responding to the significant growth in the volume of activities and fluctuations in services caused by the effects of the global Corona pandemic.

Ports in the Middle East occupied four of the top five positions in the second edition of the Container Ports Performance Index globally.

King Abdullah Port in Saudi Arabia topped the rankings in 2021.

Ports, Salalah in  Oman, Hamad Port in Qatar, and Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi, came among the top five, and Jeddah Islamic Port in Saudi Arabia ranked eighth.

Over four-fifths of global merchandise trade by volume is transported by sea, with around 35% of total cargo volume and more than 60% of trade-value cargo being containerized.
