Saudi Professional League (SPL) has taken steps to help prevent the spread of coronavirus by stopping the pre-match ritual of the Fair Play Handshake.

The decision will be implemented in all the competitions, currently held in Saudi Arabia.

In a statement, the SPL said that opposing teams would line up without shaking hands prior to kick-off and after the end of the game due to concerns over the virus being spread by hand-to-hand contact.

Saudi's sports ministry had said before that there is no suspension or postponement to the league, as the current situation in the Arab country is stable.

On March 6, the Premier League had banned also the pre-match ritual of the Fair Play Handshake.

It is worth mentioning that the virus hit many countries across the world as a number of states suspended all sports events and the other countries decided to play all the matches behind closed doors.

Italy’s government decided on Monday to suspend all sports events in Italy, including all matches in Serie A, until April 3.

In a press conference, the country’s prime minister Giuseppe Conte announced the suspension of all sports events in the European state, but the decision will not be implemented on the Italian clubs or national teams participating in international competitions.
