Spanish judicial authorities have officially closed the investigation into the tragic death of Diogo Jota, the late Liverpool FC forward, and his brother Andre Silva, confirming there is no criminal liability linked to the accident.
The crash occurred on July 3, 2025, in northern Spain, when a Lamborghini carrying the two brothers veered off the A-52 highway near the town of Cernadilla.
The car caught fire after the crash, leading to their immediate deaths.
Investigations concluded that the primary cause of the accident was a tire blowout while attempting to overtake another vehicle, which caused the driver to lose control and collide with the central road barrier.
A court in the province of Zamora confirmed that all examined evidence showed no indication of criminal wrongdoing or responsibility.
The criminal case was formally dismissed in November after a detailed review conducted in cooperation with traffic accident experts.
According to the Daily Mail, the court noted that while the criminal case has been closed, affected parties still have the option to pursue civil claims if they choose.
The brothers were traveling to Santander en route to the United Kingdom, where Jota had been expected to return after recovering from lung surgery.
Their deaths sent shockwaves across the European football community.
