Spain Stands for Sovereign Europe

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has dismissed any notion of Europe becoming dependent on either US President Donald Trump or Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing that international relations in the 21st century should be based on alliances rather than subjugation.

Speaking at a Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) event before departing for the Ukraine Summit in London, Sánchez reaffirmed Europe’s commitment to a global order built on free, equal, and sovereign nations.

He stressed that supporting Ukraine against what he described as Putin’s "new imperialist threat" is essential to maintaining these principles.

Sánchez underscored the need for a stronger Europe, calling it a necessity rather than just a slogan. He likened it to a “life insurance policy” for the continent’s stability and independence.

Spain, however, faces challenges in meeting its defense spending commitments. According to El País, the country’s planned defense expenditure for this year is only 1.32% of its GDP—falling short of NATO’s 2% target, which it is not expected to reach until at least 2029.

Sánchez’s remarks highlight Spain’s stance on strengthening European autonomy while balancing its obligations within NATO and its strategic alliances.
