The extremist Somali "Al-Shabab" movement launched an attack on a camp belonging to the African Union Mission forces in the Shabelle region, in the center of the country.

The assailants killed at least 59 people.

Somali state television quoted local security officials as saying that the Burundian unit of the African forces repelled what they described as a complex attack launched by the movement on a military base in the town of Albaraf in the state of Hirshabelle.

Initial reports speak of the killing of 59 people and wounding of dozens, noting that as the attack continues and its elements carry out operations to pursue the enemy, the death toll may rise.

Andalus Radio, the mouthpiece of the extremist movement, said that the movement's members launched what it described as a major attack on the Burundian military base.
