Sisi, Macron Discuss Libya Over Phone, Renew Commitment to Egypt's Initiative

Hours ago, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi discussed the situation in Libya with the French President Emmanuel Macron over phone.

Presidential Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Rady explained that both leaders exchanged views over the recent developments in the Libyan issue.

President Sisi mentioned Egyptian efforts to achieve a political settlement of the issue within the framework of Cairo initiative for Libya. 

On his part, the French President welcomed Egypt's initiative, stressing its importance to restore the political track as an original solution to the Libyan crisis, especially it is consistent with the relevant international resolutions on Libya.

Macron praised the Egyptian efforts and tireless efforts to settle the conflict and restore peace in all Libyan lands.

Rady also said that both leaders agreed to continue talks and coordination to implement the provisions of the Egyptian initiative, in particular to support the "Libyan National Army" in combating terrorism and foreign-backed armed groups.

The contact also dealt with a number of topics of strategic bilateral relations between Egypt and France, especially at the military and security levels, as the two presidents stressed mutual will to develop joint cooperation in various fields and intensify work to advance the distinguished relations between the two countries.

Earlier,President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, Aguila Saleh, Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, and Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan Armed Forces, announced the Cairo Declaration Initiative on Libya.

The Egyptian initiative calls for a ceasefire stresses on outcomes of the Berlin Conference and demands reviving the political path for the crisis.

Previously, Sisi told a news conference that the cease-fire meant to pave the way for elections in oil-rich Libya. He warned that military solution will not solve the country’s crisis.

Global powers, including Russia, France, ans UAE earlier expressed their support to the Egyptian initiative.
