Sisi, South African Counterpart Discuss Latest Developments on GERD

On Tuesday, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi held a telephone conversation with his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa to discuss the latest developments regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), according to the the Egyptian presidency spokesman, Bassam Rady.

In a statement, Rady said that President El-Sisi expressed his appreciation for Ramaphosa’s efforts during the GERD talks while chairing the African Union last year expressing his hope that this vital file would witness a hopeful and required progress in the upcoming period under this year's AU chairmanship of Congo and to reach a legal binding agreement that would protect Egypt’s water rights.

On his part, the South African president expressed his views on Egypt’s positive efforts during the GERD talks - under the auspices of the AU - in order to reach a solution for the issue.

The two leaders also discussed the arrangements for the upcoming African Union meeting which is going to be held via video conference

Earlier on Tuesday, Sisi discussed GERD's latest developments concerning the decade-long standoff caused with his Congolese Counterpart Félix Tshisekedi, the incoming AU chairperson, during a meeting held at Cairo.

According to a statement released by the Egyptian presidency, both leaders agreed to reinforce the joint coordination and cooperation to follow up on the developments of the long-running dispute
