On Saturday, Egypt's President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received a phone call from his South African counterpart Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa and they discussed the latest regional developments, especially in Libya, according to the presidency spokesman, Bassam Rady.

Rady said that the two presidents tackled the latest developments in Libya and the joint African efforts towards a peaceful settlement in the North African country within the framework of the Cairo Declaration Initiative.

The Egyptian and South African also exchanged views over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) file, amid current negotiations between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia.

Ramaphosa praised the Egyptian efforts to reach peaceful solutions in Libya, welcoming the Cairo Declaration initiative, which is consistent with the efforts of the African Union to end the negative repercussions of the Libyan crisis on the stability and security of the neighboring countries and the African continent as a whole.

On his part, President Sisi re-affirmed Egypt's firm stance to reach a comprehensive political settlement that achieves security and stability in Libya, and put an end to violence, fighting and terrorism, with the return of state institutions, and ensuring the free will of the Libyan people and preserving their capabilities.

Sisi's Initiative on Libyan Crisis

Last week, El Sisi announced the Egyptian initiative to solve the Libyan crisis, telling a news conference that the initiative includes a cease-fire and is meant to pave the way for elections in oil-rich Libya. He warned that any military solution will not solve the country’s crisis.

In previous statements to SEE, Saleh said that “It’s simple. Let’s hold free elections in the three provinces of Libya. Historically Libya is considered three provinces, Tripolitania in the northwest, Cyrenaica in the east, and Fezzan in the southwest.”

Egypt’s and coronavirus

Egypt registered on Friday 1,577 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total cases to 41,303 since the beginning of the virus outbreak.

“Forty-five more deaths were confirmed; raising the total number to 1,422,” Khaled Megahed, the Health Ministry’s spokesman, said in a statement.

“Up to 11,108 coronavirus patients have recovered so far,” the spokesman said.

“417 Egyptians were among the recovered patients today,” he added.

Also, the number of coronavirus patients who had now been retested for the virus and had received negative results has reached 12,493 after getting proper treatment in coordination with the World Health Organization (WHO).
