On Tuesday, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi met with the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 31st Arab Summit taking place on November 1-2 in Algeria.
According to Presidency spokesperson Bassam Radi, President Sisi welcomed meeting with the UN Secretary-General, stressing Egypt's keenness to continue strengthening cooperation with the United Nations institutions in various fields to support international peace and security, as well as coordination with the UN to enhance its role.
Sisi also affirmed Egypt's appreciation for the fruitful and growing cooperation with the United Nations on the issue of climate change, pointing out in this regard to Egypt's expected hosting of the COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh this November.
President Sisi also highlighted Egypt's endeavor to work during this summit to adopt a comprehensive vision that includes the needs of developing countries, taking into account the capabilities of other countries at the same time, in order to reach practical and internationally applicable solutions and commitments with regard to facing climate challenges.
On his part, the UN Secretary-General praised Egypt's ‘distinguished active role’ in the international multilateral action system, expressing his appreciation for the cooperation between Egypt and the United Nations, and the Egyptian participation in the various activities of the UN.
Guterres also expressed his aspiration for the Sharm el-Sheikh summit to be a milestone in the issue of climate change, praising in this context the relevant historical positions of Egypt, especially since it is ‘one of the first developing countries to adopt decisive policies on the climate change file.’
