Sisi, Greek PM Call for Political Solution to Middle East Crisis

On Monday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held a telephone conversation with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, during which the two leaders discussed escalating regional tensions and affirmed their shared commitment to diplomatic solutions and regional stability.

Prime Minister Mitsotakis sought President El-Sisi’s views on recent developments in the conflict between Iran and Israel. Both leaders stressed the urgent need to halt military escalation and emphasized that a negotiated political solution remains the only viable path to ending the crisis.

They also expressed deep concern over the potential for further regional destabilization, warning that prolonged hostilities could endanger peace and security across the Middle East and beyond. The leaders jointly highlighted that the intensifying conflict should not distract from the ongoing humanitarian tragedy in Gaza. They called for an immediate cessation of hostilities there and the urgent facilitation of humanitarian aid to civilians, especially given current access restrictions.

The conversation also touched on critical regional issues including maritime border demarcation in the Eastern Mediterranean, irregular migration flows toward Greece, and the situation in Libya. Both leaders stressed the importance of forming a unified Libyan government capable of conducting simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections, and voiced support for a consensus-based roadmap led by Libya’s legislative bodies.

President El-Sisi and Prime Minister Mitsotakis further affirmed their commitment to strengthening Egypt-Greece bilateral relations, particularly in economic cooperation and energy development.

In this context, President El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s unwavering commitment to protecting all religious sites on its territory, with specific reference to the historic Saint Catherine Monastery. He underscored the monastery’s profound spiritual and religious value and cited a recent Egyptian court ruling that affirmed the site’s protected status. El-Sisi called for correcting misinformation circulating in some European circles regarding the monastery, emphasizing that its sanctity remains fully respected and safeguarded.
