Jannik Sinner kept his bid for a rare Sunshine Double alive after defeating Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in the semi-finals of the Miami Open.
Zverev made a strong start but fell behind early when Sinner secured a crucial break in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead, finishing the opening set with confidence.
The second set proved far more competitive, with both players holding serve throughout. At 6-6, the match moved into a tense tiebreak, where Zverev initially held firm before a costly mistake shifted the momentum.
At 4-4 in the breaker, the German misjudged a routine overhead after Sinner’s defensive lob, handing his opponent a decisive mini-break. Sinner capitalized immediately, closing out the match two points later.
The Italian, currently ranked world No.2, is now one win away from completing the Sunshine Double, a feat last achieved by Roger Federer in 2017.
“Coming here, trying to produce some good tennis, that was my main goal,” Sinner said after the match. “Standing here again in the final means very much to me. It was a tough encounter. He played incredible tennis, but I served very well in the key moments.”
The victory marks Sinner’s seventh consecutive win over Zverev, extending his head-to-head advantage to 8-4.
Despite the defeat, Zverev will climb to world No.3 in the rankings, moving ahead of Novak Djokovic following his semi-final run.
Sinner will face Jiri Lehecka in the final after the Czech defeated Arthur Fils in the other semi-final.
Lehecka is chasing his first ATP Masters 1000 title, while Sinner enters the match as the clear favorite, having won all three of their previous meetings without dropping a set.
