Shoukry, UNSMIL Head discuss Libyan crisis

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received Jan Kubis, the Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Cairo.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Hafez said that the meeting dealt with discussions on developments in the Libyan crisis.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman added in a statement that the meeting included discussing a political solution that preserves the unity of Libya and preserves the capabilities of its people.

Hafez stated that Shuokry congratulated Kubis on his appointment as a United Nations envoy to Libya, and during the meeting, he reviewed the efforts made by Egypt to achieve a political settlement in Libya.

Shoukry stressed the need to complete the current political track by holding a meeting of the House of Representatives to discuss the formation of the government, ending with holding elections according to constitutional rules as scheduled on December 24, 2021.

The Foreign Minister also stressed the need for all parties to implement the terms of the ceasefire agreement, especially with regard to the expulsion of foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya. He underscored the importance of confronting any attempts that would hinder the unification of Libyan security institutions or perpetuate the Libyan pision.

Shoukry also reviewed Egypt's efforts related to pushing the economic path, which has led to a package of measures that are in the interest of the Libyan people. He emphasized the need for economic reforms to coincide with an effective political framework in order to ensure the way forward in a comprehensive settlement of the Libyan crisis.
