Foreign Minister (FM) Sameh Shoukry received a phone call from João Cravinho, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Portugal, on Sunday, December 24, 2023.

The two ministers discussed the developments in the situation in Gaza and the necessary international efforts to stop the war and contain its repercussions.

The official spokesman for the Foreign Ministry said that the ministers' discussions dealt extensively with the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

In this regard, the ministers agreed on the need for the full and immediate implementation of the provisions of the latest UN Security Council resolution, which includes the establishment of a UN-sponsored mechanism to accelerate and monitor the implementation of humanitarian assistance to the sector, in a way that is sufficient to meet the urgent needs of the Palestinian people.

In the same context, Shoukry assured his Portuguese counterpart of the need for international parties to fulfill their responsibilities to support the achievement of a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, as this is the best way to effectively implement the provisions of the UN Security Council resolution and preserve the lives of Palestinian civilians.

For his part, Potugese FM expressed his country's aspiration to achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible.

Furthermore, the two ministers agreed to continue consultation during the coming period regarding measures to contain the crisis in Gaza, limit its repercussions, and prevent the conflict from expanding to other parts of the region.
