FIFA has decided not to relocate matches involving the Iran national football team at the 2026 World Cup, according to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
The tournament, set to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, will see Iran compete in Group G alongside Egypt, Belgium, and New Zealand.
The Iranian Football Federation had requested that its group stage matches not be held in the United States due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
However, Sheinbaum confirmed during a press conference that FIFA ultimately ruled out any changes to match locations.
She explained that relocating fixtures would involve major logistical challenges and was not feasible given the limited time before the tournament.
FIFA had previously expressed reservations about the request, maintaining its commitment to the original schedule and host venues.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has also been engaged in efforts to ensure Iran’s participation in the tournament despite political tensions between Tehran and Washington.
