This talk took place during the annual Nadia Younes's memorial lecture hosted by AUC today under the title of "Global Leadership in a Changing World".

Shafik laughed while saying that the university’s land was sold many decades ago for LE 35; the price of buying a wedding dress for her great grandmother’s granddaughter at that time.

She joked, "I think it’s a good investment to sell a land located in Tahrir square in order to acquire a dress".

In other context, she mentioned those harsh days when her family’s money was confiscated during Gamal Abdel Nasser’s ruling and they all had to travel to the United States searching for better life.

After that, their whole life changed through good education and hard work.

It’s worth mentioning that Shafik was the first woman ever to be appointed as director of London School of Economics and Political Science.

Moreover, she was the youngest World Bank’s vice president as she assumed this position at age of 36.

She was also the former deputy director-general at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the former deputy governor of the Bank of England.
