Heavy snowfall and low temperatures have led to the postponement of football matches in both Germany and England, disrupting domestic competitions across Europe.

In Germany, a Bundesliga match was postponed after large amounts of snow and extreme cold covered the pitch, making it unsafe for play.

The German Football League (DFL) announced on Friday that the Millerntor Stadium, home of St. Pauli, was closed following consultations with local authorities.

The match between St. Pauli and RB Leipzig, scheduled for Saturday in Hamburg, was called off.

St. Pauli said the decision was due to heavy snowfall and freezing conditions that fully covered the playing surface, posing safety risks to all participants on matchday.

The club also cited the overall critical weather situation in Hamburg, adding that a new date for the match would be announced soon.

Germany has experienced severe winter conditions in recent days, with temperatures dropping below zero and forecasts predicting further snowfall over the weekend.

Concerns have been raised that additional Bundesliga matches, including Union Berlin vs. Mainz and Werder Bremen vs. Hoffenheim, could also be affected as the league resumes after a three-week winter break.

In England, freezing temperatures caused by Storm Gertie have also disrupted football schedules. A third-round FA Cup match between Salford City and Swindon Town was postponed due to frozen conditions.

Additionally, three League Two matches scheduled for Saturday were called off, including fixtures at Oldham Athletic, Chesterfield, and Accrington Stanley, as Britain continues to grapple with a severe cold wave.
