Tennis legend Serena Williams is set to make her long-awaited return to professional competition after an absence of nearly four years, with organizers confirming her participation in the upcoming HSBC Championships in London.

The 44-year-old will compete in the doubles tournament alongside rising Canadian star Victoria Mboko, currently ranked among the top 10 players on the WTA Tour.

Williams last appeared on the professional circuit at the 2022 US Open, where she reached the third round before announcing that she was “evolving away from tennis,” a statement widely interpreted as a retirement announcement. However, she never formally declared her retirement from the sport.

Speculation about a possible comeback intensified in recent months after Williams re-entered tennis’ anti-doping testing pool, a necessary step for any player seeking to return to competition. On Monday, she further fueled expectations by posting a brief message on social media: “Good news travels fast.”

Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in tennis history, Williams captured 23 Grand Slam singles titles and 73 career singles trophies after turning professional in 1995. She remains second on the all-time list of Grand Slam singles champions behind Margaret Court.

Among her many achievements, Williams completed the famous “Serena Slam” on two occasions by holding all four major titles simultaneously across consecutive seasons. Between 2012 and 2015, beginning with her triumph at Wimbledon Championships, she won eight of 13 Grand Slam tournaments and claimed Olympic gold in London.

Williams also enjoyed remarkable success in doubles competition, winning 14 Grand Slam doubles titles alongside her sister, Venus Williams.

Her most recent Grand Slam singles victory came at the 2017 Australian Open, where she defeated Venus Williams in the final while unknowingly in the early stages of pregnancy.

The HSBC Championships are scheduled to take place from June 8 to June 14 at Queen’s Club in West Kensington, where fans will witness one of the most anticipated comebacks in recent tennis history.
