Senegal were crowned Africa Cup of Nations champions for the second time in their history after a dramatic 1–0 victory over Morocco in the final of the 2025 tournament on Sunday night. The tightly contested match, played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, remained goalless through regular time before being decided by a late extra-time goal.

The final was marked by tension, controversy, and missed opportunities, with both sides locked in a tactical battle for much of the game. Morocco, playing on home soil, dominated possession at various stages and created several chances, but were unable to break through Senegal’s disciplined defense.

The defining moment came in the 94th minute of the first period of extra time when Senegal forward Pape Gueye unleashed a powerful strike that beat Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, sending the Senegalese bench and fans into celebration.

Earlier, Morocco had a golden opportunity to settle the match in their favor late in regular time. In stoppage time, the referee awarded a penalty after Brahim Díaz went down in the box. The decision sparked furious protests from Senegal’s players, with head coach Pape Thiaw threatening to pull his team off the pitch. After a lengthy delay, Díaz stepped up to take the spot kick in the 114th minute but missed badly, allowing Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy to make a comfortable save.

That missed penalty proved decisive, as Senegal capitalized shortly afterward to seal the title. The victory marked Senegal’s second Africa Cup of Nations triumph, adding to their first title won in 2021 in Cameroon. Morocco, meanwhile, were left heartbroken as their wait for a second continental title continues, having last lifted the trophy in 1976.
