Senator John Cornyn stated on Saturday that the former President Donald Trump's upcoming impeachment trial is an “unnecessarily vindictive”, warning that it could lead to the prosecution of former Democratic presidents.

"It's unnecessarily vindictive, and I would say even petty to insist on trying somebody who's not even in office anymore," Cornyn asserted. "And sacrifice or squander, really, the ability to actually do what President Biden has said he wanted us to do and that's come together and get some things done."

“If it is a good idea to impeach and try former presidents, what about former Democratic presidents when Republicans get the majority in 2022?” Cornyn tweeted at majority leader Chuck Schumer.

“Think about it and let’s do what is best for the country,” he added.

The House impeached Trump on Jan. 13 and the trial could have started immediately after that; however, it was scheduled to start on Feb. 8 with the full Senate required to meet six days a week until the trial is complete.

On his part, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell thanked Democrats for agreeing on the delay, which will give Trump's defense team time to be prepared.

“Republicans set out to ensure the Senate's next steps will respect former President Trump's rights and due process, the institution of the Senate, and the office of the presidency,” McConnell spokesperson Doug Andres said in a statement on Friday. “That goal has been achieved.”

Moreover, Biden said that the delay helps his administration "get up and running" on the COVID-19 crisis.

Earlier this month, US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that former President’s impeachment, affirming that,’ No one in the country is above the law.’

“Today in a bipartisan way the House demonstrated that no one is above the law, not even the president of the United States,” Pelosi said at a ceremony during which she signed the article of impeachment.

“He must go. He is a clear and present danger to the nation that we all love,” she added.

The US House of Representatives majority has voted for the impeachment over the latest Capitol riots, which made him the first US President to be impeached twice.
