The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) strongly condemned the terrorist attack against two Egyptian peacekeepers serving in the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Mopti region in central Mali.

In a statement released by the Security Council, it said: “The members of the Security Council expressed their deepest condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims, as well as to Egypt,"

"We pay tribute to all peacekeepers who risk their lives," the statement noted.

The Security Council statement came after the UN mission in Mali lost two Egyptian peacekeepers on Friday.

The two blue helmets were killed and another was injured when their armored personnel carrier hit an improvised explosive device outside the town of Douentza, in the Mopti region in central Mali.

They called on the transitional government of Mali to swiftly investigate the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice, and keep the relevant troop-contributing country informed of the progress.

Moreover, the council reaffirmed the need for all countries to combat by all means, in accordance with the UN Charter and other obligations under international law, including international human rights law, international refugee law, and international humanitarian law, threats to international peace, and security caused by terrorist acts.

"The members of the Security Council reiterated their full support to MINUSMA and the other security presences in Mali and in the Sahel region, as mentioned in Resolution 2584," the statement pointed out.

In the same connection, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, said the incident also marked the sixth time a Mission convoy has been hit since 22 May.

It's worth mentioning that Mali remains one of the most dangerous places for peacekeepers.
