Japan reopened most schools in the northeast and north of the country on Wednesday after they were closed following a 7.5 magnitude earthquake that struck the region, while warnings of another major quake remained in effect.
The Kyodo News agency reported that Japanese authorities urged students in the affected areas to prepare for immediate evacuation for about a week after the earthquake, which struck Monday evening and prompted the Japan Meteorological Agency to issue a warning for coastal areas in Hokkaido and the Sanriku coast.
More than 300 schools were closed on Tuesday in five prefectures: Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima, according to the Japanese Ministry of Education.
Local governments reported that some schools damaged by the earthquake remained closed.
