Lionel Messi remains undecided on whether he will feature at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni.
Speaking ahead of Argentina’s title defence, Scaloni confirmed that the final decision rests solely with the captain, who could make history by appearing in a sixth World Cup.
FIFA’s flagship tournament is set to begin on June 11, with Argentina opening their Group J campaign against Algeria national football team on June 16.
They will also face Austria national football team and Jordan national football team in the group stage.
If he participates, Messi will extend his record as the player with the most World Cup appearances for Argentina.
The forward, who turns 39 during the tournament, has already made 26 appearances and scored 13 goals in the competition.
He also holds the record for the most goal involvements in World Cup history with 21, comprising 13 goals and eight assists.
Messi is also closing in on the all-time scoring record held by Miroslav Klose, needing three more goals to draw level.
Scaloni reiterated his desire to include Messi in the squad but acknowledged that the decision depends on the player’s physical condition and mindset.
“That’s a question more for him,” Scaloni said. “I will do everything I can to make sure he’s there. For the sake of football, he has to be there. But it’s not my decision.”
He added that Messi has earned the right to decide without pressure, stressing that the team will respect whatever choice he makes.
Argentina are scheduled to play friendly matches against Mauritania national football team and Zambia national football team on home soil this month.
Their planned Finalissima clash with Spain national football team in Qatar was cancelled due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
Scaloni confirmed that Messi will feature in both upcoming friendlies, although it remains unclear whether he will start.
“For Argentinians, it is a beautiful opportunity to see him on the pitch and enjoy what we always enjoy when he is here,” Scaloni said.
