Senegal forward Sadio Mane will officially miss World Cup- Qatar 2022 due to a recent leg injury, Senegal's football federation confirmed on Thursday.

The 30-year-old suffers from an injury to his right fibula during Bayern Munich's 6-1 Bundesliga win over Werder Bremen last week.

Early this week, Senegal's football federation said Mane would miss their "first games" in the group stage.

Shortly, after Senegal confirmed Mane's situation, Bayern Munich announced that Mane went "successful" surgery in Austria on Thursday evening.

"Sadio Mane underwent successful surgery in Innsbruck by Prof Christian Fink and Dr Andy Williams from London on Thursday evening," the German club said in a statement.

It added: "During the operation, a tendon was reattached to the head of his right fibula. The Bayern forward will therefore no longer be available to play for Senegal at the World Cup and will begin his rehab in Munich in the next few days."

The reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions will start their World Cup road against the Netherlands on Monday.
