A tense and cautious contest remained goalless at halftime, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances despite a competitive opening 45 minutes.
But South Africa found the breakthrough in the second half when Thapelo Masiko struck in the 63rd minute, capitalizing on one of his side’s best attacking moves of the match.
The goal proved decisive as Bafana Bafana held firm for the remainder of the game to secure a famous victory and punch their ticket to the knockout stage.
The result confirmed South Africa’s place in the Round of 32, finishing second in Group A behind leaders Mexico, who ended the group stage with a perfect nine points.
South Africa advanced with four points, while South Korea were eliminated in third place on three points, and the Czech Republic finished bottom with one.
South Africa’s disciplined defensive display was once again anchored by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, while Masiko’s winner ensured the African side continued their impressive World Cup run.
