Russia's  Foreign Minister (FM) Sergey Lavrov announced today, Tuesday, that Russia hopes the United States of America (USA) will return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear program, and this is a condition for Iran's implementation of the deal.

Lavrov said after talks with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif that both Russia and Iran have one position, and they are interested in fully preserving the nuclear deal.

Lavrov added that the two countries convinced that the way, to achieve progress, lies exclusively through the coordinated and comprehensive implementation of the provisions of this important document (the nuclear deal) by all concerned parties in a consistent manner, strictly with the United Nations(UN) Security Council Resolution 2231."

"We hope that the efforts being exerted now will yield results and allow the preservation of the JCPOA and that the United States will return to full implementation of the Security Council resolution, which in turn will create the conditions for the Islamic Republic of Iran to comply with all the requirements of the nuclear agreement," Lavrov added.

It is noteworthy that Zarif had called on the administration of US President Joe Biden to initiate a return to the nuclear agreement from which his predecessor, Donald Trump, withdrew in 2018.

In 2015, the six countries (the United Kingdom, Germany, China, Russia, the United States, and France) and Iran announced the realization of a joint comprehensive action plan.

The agreement provided for the lifting of sanctions in exchange for limiting Iran's nuclear program.

But the deal in its original form did not last for even three years, as the United States announced in May 2018, its unilateral withdrawal from it, and the restoration of strict sanctions against Tehran.

In turn, Iran announced a gradual reduction in its obligations under the agreement, starting with the final phase on January 5, 2020.
