The Russian Foreign Ministry has summoned the US Ambassador to Moscow  John Sullivan on Thursday after the US imposed sanctions against Moscow, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

Zakharova indicated: "I think that right now, the US ambassador to Russia is at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of our country. I wouldn’t have said this before, but now I can say this: this won’t be a pleasant meeting for him."

In a statement issued by the US embassy in Moscow, Sullivan revealed: "I informed Russian officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of far-reaching measures that the United States is taking to hold the Russian government accountable for its adversarial actions. The meeting was professional and respectful.

He added: "We have been clear that we desire a relationship with Russia that is stable and predictable. However, we have also been clear – publicly and privately – that we will defend our national interests and impost costs on the Russian government for its actions that seek to harm our sovereignty, or our allies, partners, and values."

Earlier today, US President Joe Biden signed a new order imposing several sanctions against various Russian inpiduals and entities due to the American claims of Russian cyber interference in the US elections.
