Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law formalizing the country’s withdrawal from the European Anti-Torture Convention, a treaty established in 1987 to prohibit inhuman or degrading treatment.
The legislation, published in Russia’s official legal information system, confirms Moscow’s exit from the convention, which it had joined in 1998.
The move follows Russia’s broader disengagement from European institutions.
Moscow ended its membership in the Council of Europe in March 2022 and withdrew from the European Convention on Human Rights in September 2022.
