Floods in the Kurgan region in southern Russia threaten the lives of more than 19,000 people, days after unprecedented floods displaced thousands of people and flooded a city in the Ural region, according to an official Russian news agency.

TASS news agency quoted the local authorities of the Russian Emergencies Ministry as saying that at least 4,000 homes may also be affected, adding that the relevant authorities had taken emergency measures in the region.

Local authorities said that parts of the Russian city of Orenburg may be flooded during the next 24 hours, as water levels in the Ural and Samara rivers are expected to rise by 5 to 40 centimetres.
