Russian Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko said on Sunday that Ukraine will not be able to become a member of the European Union (EU) in the foreseeable future.

"Of course, Ukraine will never join the European Union in the near future," she added, in comments reported by the Russian news agency "TASS."

Moreover, Matvienko added that she does not believe that the European Union (EU) will accept a country with a completely devastated economy.

It is worth mentioning that, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell stressed that the European Union (EU) is doing everything that can be done to solve the food crisis.

In exclusive statements to the “Al-Arabiya News” TV channel, Borrell said that several European countries are ready to remove mines from Ukraine’s ports and secure sea lanes.

He explained that reaching an agreement that would allow the export of grains and fertilizers could help reduce food prices and ease the global food crisis.

Moreover, EU high representative stressed that the sanctions imposed by the union are not the cause of food shortages.

In press remarks, Borrell said that EU plans to provide 225 million euros to help North African countries cope with the food crisis.

Moreover, he stressed that stopping Ukraine’s war is the key out of the food crisis, warning of dire economic consequences if the Black Sea ports remain closed.

Earlier, Borrell said that the Russian military attack on Ukraine “threatens to trigger a global wave of hunger.”
