On Monday, Russia's communications regulator said his country fined Google 21 billion rubles ($360 million) for failing to remove content related to its military operation in Ukraine.

Roskomnadzor mentioned that Google-owned YouTube had failed to block fake reports about the attack in Ukraine, "extremist and terrorist propaganda" and content that "invites minors to participate in unauthorized demonstrations."

While the decision is a new conviction for Google, the fine is based on its annual revenue in Russia.

Russian authorities recently escalated pressure on Western social media organizations with repeated fines and threats in an effort to remove criticism from the internet.

Like many of its Western competitors, Google recently pulled out of the Russian market to denounce Russia's military intervention in Ukraine.

RIA-Novosti news agency quoted expert Vladimir Zyukov as saying that the fine is the largest fine imposed by Moscow on a Western technology company.

He added that his country could impose on Google "as many fines as you want, and you won't get the money" since the company has withdrawn from the country.

Google had no immediate comment on the fine.

In March, Roskomnadzor described the activities of Google and YouTube as "terrorist", paving the way for a possible ban in Moscow, as did Twitter, Instagram, and many independent media at the beginning of the war.

Moscow has tightened legal sanctions against critics of the conflict. Those convicted of spreading "false information" face up to 15 years in prison.
