Moscow announced Tuesday that a Russian military ship had prevented an American naval destroyer from "violating its borders," and expelled it from Russian territorial waters.
The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement: "We prevented the US destroyer John McCain from violating our borders in the Peter the Great Gulf," near the Sea of Japan, east of Russia.
The statement stated that "a Russian military ship spotted an American ship operating illegally in Russian waters," adding that "the American ship was expelled to international waters after a warning from the Russian destroyer Admiral Vinogradov."
