Morocco captain Romain Saïss has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a distinguished career with the Atlas Lions.
The decision comes just days after Morocco’s defeat to Senegal national football team in the Africa Cup of Nations final.
Saïss confirmed his decision in a heartfelt statement posted on Instagram, describing the honor of representing his country as far more than a sporting duty.
He emphasized that wearing the captain’s armband for Morocco was the pinnacle of his professional career, calling it a symbol of identity, pride, and national responsibility.
The veteran defender reflected on a lifelong dream of defending the national colors, stating that he had given everything in service of the team, fueled by patriotism and the unwavering support of Moroccan fans.
He also extended gratitude to his teammates, the technical and medical staff led by head coach Walid Regragui, and all those working behind the scenes, praising the family spirit that defined his journey with the squad.
Saïss paid tribute to Moroccan supporters for their loyalty and passion, and expressed appreciation to King Mohammed VI for his role in developing Moroccan football and enhancing its continental and international standing.
Concluding his message, Saïss voiced confidence in the future of the national team, affirming that although his playing days are over, he will remain a devoted supporter of the Atlas Lions.
Over a 14-year international career, Saïss earned 86 caps and served as Morocco’s captain for an extended period, becoming a symbol of commitment and discipline within the squad.
Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou paid tribute to his longtime teammate on social media, writing: “Thank you for all the moments we shared together. You were a legend for our national team, and above all, a great human being. Warm wishes to you and your family. Thank you.”
