AS Roma suffered a shock 1–0 home defeat to French side Lille on Thursday night at the Stadio Olimpico in the second round of the UEFA Europa League group stage.

The only goal of the match came in the 6th minute when Icelandic midfielder Hákon Arnar Haraldsson struck early to secure a valuable away win for Lille.

But the real drama unfolded later in the match with an unprecedented moment in Europa League history.

Lille’s Turkish goalkeeper Berk Özer pulled off a remarkable feat, saving three consecutive penalty kicks from Roma.

Each time the spot-kick was retaken following VAR intervention, and each time Özer denied Roma again, cementing his status as the hero of the night.

Roma were left empty-handed despite dominating possession, while Lille walked away with a historic victory.

The defeat leaves Roma stuck on 3 points in the group, with just one win and two goals scored so far, while Lille climb to 6 points, level with Braga in second place.

Lille, who opened their campaign with a 2–1 win over Norway’s Brann, continue their strong start as they push for a place in the knockout rounds.
