AS Roma earned a hard-fought 1–1 draw against hosts Bologna FC 1909 on Thursday evening in an all-Italian clash during the first leg of the Round of 16 in the UEFA Europa League.
The match took place at Stadio Renato Dall'Ara, with both sides delivering an intense contest that leaves the tie evenly balanced ahead of the return leg.
The home side broke the deadlock early in the second half when Federico Bernardeschi found the net in the 50th minute, giving Bologna the advantage and igniting the home crowd.
Roma responded strongly and managed to level the score in the 71st minute through captain Lorenzo Pellegrini, who finished a well-worked move to restore parity for the visitors.
The decisive second leg between the two teams will be played next Thursday at Stadio Olimpico, the home ground of Roma.
This encounter marked the first-ever continental meeting between Bologna and Roma. The capital club had previously defeated Bologna 1–0 in Serie A earlier this season, and they will now look to capitalize on home advantage in the return leg to secure a place in the quarterfinals.
