Roberta Metsola Elected as New EU Parliament President

On Tuesday, the European Parliament elected Roberta Metsola as the new president, after the death of her predecessor, David Sassoli who died at the age of 65 years old last week.

The victory of Metsola was announced by the parliament on Twitter, saying: “Roberta Metsola new elected President of the European Parliament with 458 votes”.

She told reporters at a press conference: “I am honored to have been elected by my colleagues as president of the European Parliament”.

After that, she remembered the former president of the EU institution, expressing: “
I know that I have large shoes to fill, and I will pay a tribute to David and all those before him by always, always standing up for this house and for Europe”.

The newly elected president presented her vows today, and she pledged: “In the next years, people across Europe will look to our institution for leadership and direction, while others will continue to test the limits of our democratic values and European principles” asserting: “We must fight back against the anti-E.U. narrative that takes hold so easily and so quickly”.

The Maltese politician also pointed out: “I can confirm and pledge to all of you that this is the position I will push forward as I have done as vice-president”.
