French media reports have revealed that former Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane has involved in confidential and intensive talks with the French Football Federation (FFF) over a potential appointment as head coach of the national team, succeeding current manager Didier Deschamps after the 2026 World Cup.
According to L’Équipe, discussions between Zidane and the FFF have already started as part of the federation’s long-term planning for the post-2026 era.
Deschamps’ contract is expected to expire following France’s participation in the World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The report noted that negotiations remain at an early stage, with no official agreement or contract signed so far.
However, recent talks have reportedly included the preparation of an initial shortlist of around 20 candidates who could form Zidane’s potential backroom staff.
Despite the absence of any official confirmation from the French Football Federation, its president Philippe Diallo, or sources close to the former Real Madrid manager, the reports have fueled widespread speculation that Zidane is edging closer to taking charge of Les Bleus.
Media sources added that Zidane is keen to build a broader and more specialized technical staff than the current setup, featuring a larger number of assistant coaches, alongside expanded medical, administrative, and equipment teams, as well as a dedicated communications and media unit.
