Julián Álvarez has formally informed Atlético Madrid of his desire to leave the club this summer, publicly stating that a transfer would be “the best solution for everyone” and that he hopes to “fulfil his dream," said reports.
The Argentina forward made his position clear following Argentina’s World Cup Group J victory over Austria, turning long-standing speculation into an open transfer request.
The 26-year-old, who joined Atlético in a high-profile move from Manchester City in 2024, remains under contract until 2030, with a reported €500 million release clause.
Despite his public declaration, Atlético have maintained a firm stance that he will not be sold unless the clause is activated, effectively placing the club in a strong negotiating position.
Álvarez’s statement has intensified interest from Europe’s top clubs, with Barcelona emerging as the most active suitor amid their search for a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
Real Madrid, who previously submitted a €150 million bid, have since cooled their pursuit, while Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal have also been loosely linked.
The player’s openness has added pressure to Atlético’s summer planning, particularly given the size of their investment and the long duration of his contract.
However, the club insists that their position has not changed, and any departure remains dependent on extraordinary financial terms.
With no agreement yet in sight, the situation is expected to continue through the remainder of the transfer window.
